Do you have an eye for the beauty of Coal Creek in all seasons?

Friends of Coal Creek is now accepting applications for its first ever photographer-in-residence program in winter 2022.

The residency will span from February 1 to March 31. Applications are due by January 28.

About the residency

The residency will last from February 1 to March 31. It pays a $250 stipend: half up front and half at completion. Photographers will be invited to visually explore all aspects of the Coal Creek corridor, including but not limited to macros, portraits of trail users, landscapes, action shots, and aerial drone shots (where allowed). The photographer-in-residence will also have the option of meeting with a mentor TBD for skill building and critique

The photographer-in-residence will be asked to furnish 10 original, edited images (about 1 per week, plus caption information) to Friends of Coal Creek for use on the organization’s website, social media pages, newsletter, or other brand use. A submission calendar will be finalized before the residency begins. Friends of Coal Creek will retain exclusive rights to use, print and distribute the photos for the duration of the residency, at which point they become non-exclusive rights shared with the creator.

At the end of the residency, the Friends of Coal Creek will host a gallery event to showcase the work in public (COVID notwithstanding) and sell prints as a means of fundraising. The photographer will receive 10 percent of the proceeds from photography sales at the event, paid within 1 month of the event’s conclusion.

How to apply

To apply, submit links to four of your best photographs, your social media profiles (Instagram, Facebook), and a short artist’s statement (200 words max) about yourself, your skills and perspective, and why this residency is a good fit for you. Photo attachments will be accepted but links are preferred. (It should go without saying, but you retain all rights to all the photos in your application packet.) Send application packet to friendsofcoalcreek@gmail.com by January 28, 2022.

Selection criteria

One winner photographer will be chosen based on strength of portfolio, sentiments in artist’s statement, and size of social media following. Applications will be initially assessed by Friends of Coal Creek with a final round decided by a public Facebook poll on the Friends of Coal Creek group page at the end of January.
