CALL FOR ARTISTS:
Coal Creek Mural

Friends of Coal Creek is pleased announce an open call for Colorado mural artists to apply for the Public Road Trailhead Mural Project, funded by the City of Lafayette 2025 Public Arts Grant. The mural will adorn the western retaining wall of the Public Road underpass (see inset, above) and become a highly visible work of art at Lafayette’s busiest trailhead. Click here to read and submit the call for artists.

All submissions are due by May 15, 2025 at 11:59 p.m.

This nature-themed mural will emphasize a connection between community and urban waterway conservation. At 150 square feet, the triangular, west-facing retaining wall below South Public Road will be a focal point visible from the parking lot, picnic area, and along Coal Creek Trail. The grant covers $2,500 and additional fundraising will be provided by Friends of Coal Creek.

Judges representing Friends of Coal Creek, The Arts and Cultural Resources Department, and Lafayette Open Space will decide on a muralist by June 1st based on the strength of their artist statement and portfolio. The selected artist then needs to create three mural designs inspired by native pollinators to submit for a public vote by July 1st. The winning design will be publicly revealed August 1st and the muralist is responsible for leading a volunteer community service project for wall preparation. The mural must be completed by September 30th and include an anti-graffiti sealant.

If you have questions about this call for entries or the submission platform, please email Casey Lyons, executive director casey@friendsofcoalcreek.org.
